Why, why, why?
ODI Longneck Grips - £12
Starting from the top with the ODI Longneck grips. Forget lock-ons, they’re a lot of hype and expense. Glue and wire on a pair of Longnecks and never have sore hands again regardless of how bad the braking bumps are. These are probably one of the most comfy and forgiving grips available.
SQlab 30X Alloy Handlebar – choose 12º or 16º backsweep and low/med/high rise - £119
Handlebars are a personal choice and depend on many factors. I’ve been using these 30X bars for a while which offer more backsweep than the average MTB bar that has a 7-9º sweep. For me, choosing a bar with 12º or 16º is much more comfortable for long rides as it places the bar nicely in my hand. I roll them forward slightly to get more upsweep which helps to keep my elbows in a strong position. I also think that for modern bikes and slacker head angles these bars work better than the average bar. Finally, if you have any pain/tendonitis problems these could also help - I get recurring tendonitis within a few hours back on a normal bar and never using these.
I’ve also given away a few of these bars, and have had great feedback from the winners and also from people who have bought them on my recommendation. Also, if we look into other handlebar-handled disciplines like quad, moto and BMX is nearly impossible to find a bar straighter than a 10º backsweep.
SQlab 60X/611 Saddle – choose 13/14/15/16cm - £15
Another product I have been using for years and struggle to change. These SQlab saddles come in a choice of widths to suit the differing widths of every rider’s sit-bones. They also have great sit-bone support and rock gently side-to-side when pedalling along with your natural hip movement, this rocking can also be changed to suit your weight with 3x different rubber dampers.
SQlab 80X Stem – choose 35/50mm OR Spank SM25/30mm for dual crown forks - £89
Choose a nice short stem to suit single or dual crowns forks. around 30mm or less is a good length for any bike with modern geometry. The SQlab and Spank stems are solid units, nothing flashy but they get the job done without issue. They both come with a full complement of 5mm bolts to keep life simple.
BikeYoke Revive Dropper Post – choose any length, remote, seat tube diameter - £495
The undisputed king of droppers. I’ve used >10 BikeYoke droppers over the years and have never had a single problem. They just work dam-well all the time, and no need to strip them down if they do collect some air inside as the ‘Revive’ function means that any play can be eliminated in a few seconds - they might seem crazy expensive compared to other posts out there but that comes with a peace-of-mind that they will be a trouble-free product for a long, long, time.
Great! But, how do I win?
